Post 1.7
Well, the week is at a close...at least, from the perspective of this blog. And, as promised, here is a list of those credited with this week's quotes.

Dave...By a strange twist of fate, I've actually met Dr. Boyum. The year after I got here, there was a conference in the psychology department. My officemate at the time was married to a woman finishing up her Masters in that department, and I was invited to a dinner at their place where I sat opposite the doctor. Carolyn asked him about this very quote, and he claimed to have read it somewhere in his childhood, but he couldn't remember where.
So, while I'm happy to give credit where it is due, even he did not think he deserved it. Frankly, I think it's a Catch-22 for him and others like him. There is a mathematician named Roger Zorn at U of Indiana, I think. He's world famous because a lemma he used in a paper in the late 70's now bears his name. And he hates it. It's a stupid little lemma...it takes less than 2 minutes to prove...anyone can understand it. And he'll never be able to accomplish anything, no matter how profound, that will overcome that stupid little lemma.
Frankly, I wish I had that problem right about now.
Dave...I don't think he'd be dismayed by this or anything. It's just been my experience that academicians generally want to be associate with ideas that are both difficult and profound. Of course, my experience is colored all through by my discipline...hence this may not apply to all subjects. At all events, I did not feel "right" citing him...but I can see where you would.
